Ardastra has set a new record in the breeding of flamingos in captivity in the Bahamas. This past breeding season has yeilded a total of three flamingo chicks, the most that Ardastra has ever successfully hatched in a single season.
This will make a total of ten flamingos to have hatched right here in Ardastra gardens.
The flamingo breeding program here in Ardastra is an important step in the longterm conservation of Caribbean flamingos as it helps people to better understand the species. Although flamingos have done well to recover from the days of heavy hunting there have been reports from Great Inagua saying that the wild flocks have not been breeding as expected for the past three years due to intense drought experienced in the Southern Bahamas.
Breeding flamingos in captivity is extremely difficult particularly with small flocks but it hasn't been much of a problem for this small zoo here in Nassau, Bahamas.
